USA LLC Filing Offices: Secretary of State Websites

In an earlier article (USA LLCs in a Nutshell), we outlined the steps on how to create your LLC in the United States. Please find below an overview of all state's websites with the official state regulations on how to file your LLC. Corporate Law is predominantly state law, so there is no "central" federal website for filing a LLC. Every state keeps its own procedures and have their own decentralized websites. The degree of services available online is also varying: While most states offer almost every aspect of the filing process online, a few states are just providing the forms, some instructions and require you to file the LLC in person.

The links of the Filing Offices (mainly the websites of the respective states' Secretary of State) change every once in a while and I try to do my best to keep them up to date. Please be also aware, that there are many websites on the Internet which look like official government websites. Many of those sites are selling services and try to trick you into believing that you are on a government site. There is nothing wrong with selling services and there are many respectable online services which can help you to form your LLC. You should just be aware, when you are on a third-party site and when you are on a government site.

Most sites include the necessary forms as well as FAQs and/or further information about the respective state's regulation about LLCs.
